Black Copper Marans
When speaking of 1 or 10, the S is always on the end!
Marans Chickens originated in western France in the town of Marans. The Marans club of France established in 1929 to keep this rare breed pure. In the U.S., The Marans Chicken Club shine light on this rare breed.
Marans are best known for their rich dark eggs. They are raised by many backyard flock owners, and are a favorite of many chefs. Marans eggs make the breakfast of champions.
In the James Bond movies, they're Agent 007's favorite eggs. The eggs average 2.27 oz (64.4 g) and meet the USDA "extra large" classification. Theres times we'll pick up double yolk eggs.
The original French Marans have feathered shanks on down to the outside toe. The Cockbirds average 8 lbs + , the hens 6.5 lbs.
We started our flock of Black Copper Marans in 2007 with Wade Jeane c1 & c1 lines, and Bev Davis lines. Everyone loved the dark rich eggs, so we selected our first breeders, and started our breeding program. Since 2007 was so many generations back, these are now our lines.
In 2011 the American Poultry Association (A.P.A.) recognized Black Copper Marans as a breed.
Our Marans are bred to French standards with feathered shanks down to the outter toe. This is the same as the American Black Copper Marans. Both call for feathered shanks.
Our Marans love to free range, and it makes up a big part of their diet. They feed in the grass and vegetation along the edge of the ponds, where they hunt waterbugs, insects, crawfish, and anything that wiggles.
Free range enhances the taste of their eggs, and makes a more natural, and healthier egg.
My Marans have been very wise to predators, and take cover when there's a threat. They're laid back, but pay attention. They're non aggressive, good egg layers, docile, and make a hardy back yard flock.
If your interested in learning about Marans, Join the Marans Club, and Marans Fanciers group on fackbook. There you will find lots of helpful info on this rare breed.
I have raised about a dozen other breeds, and Marans have been my favorite because they're laid back, and easy to work with.
